Tiger's Nest Monastery

The Legend of Tiger's Nest Monastery

Deeply embedded in Buddhism and Bhutanese mythology, the Paro Taktsang is associated with the 8th-century Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan.

Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) traveled to this very site climbing on top of a tigress, a representation of his consort, Yeshe Tsogyal. After meditating for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days, and 3 hours, he defeated the local demons and preached about Buddhist teachings. This site later became a famous site for pilgrimage and finally, in 1692, the current monastery was built around it.

As one of the holiest sites in the Himalayas, today Paro Taktsang attracts Buddhist devotees and travelers from across the globe.

The Trek to the Tiger's Nest

Beginning from the base of the mountain, about 10 km from the town of Paro, the trip to Tiger's Nest Monastery is a unique experience.

  • Distance: Approximately 4 km (one way)
  • Duration: 2 to 3 hours (one way) depending on fitness level
  • Elevation Gain: Around 900 meters

Trekking through the dense pine forest, steep rocky slopes and colorful prayer flags fluttering along the way offers a stunning view with every step. Along the journey, you'll spot beautiful rhododendron trees (if in spring), a water-powered prayer wheel, and a lovely cafe at the halfway mark.

Is the Trek Difficult?

Due to the high altitude and steep slopes, the hike is considerably moderate to challenging.

Though the first half of the trek is relatively easy, the difficulty lies in the second part with around 700 stone steps to climb that lead to the monastery.

Visitors can avail the horses and mules to climb halfway up the trail, but the final stretch must be completed on foot.

If you are new to trekking, we recommend you take it slow, get enough hydration, and enjoy the breathtaking views.
